Pancakes are a traditional dessert (although you can also serve
them with a savory topping). They are particularly known for being
eaten on the Tuesday immediately before the Christian season of
Lent, this Tuesday being known as
"Shrove Tuesday" or "Pancake Tuesday"
(in Australia,
Canada
New Zealand and the
UK)
Important:
Cooking pancakes can be enjoyable, but you must take appropriate safety
precautions. Hot oil can be dangerous.
- Always take appropriate safety precautions when cooking.
- Do NOT use excessive amounts of oil.
- Hot oil can be dangerous. Take particular care NOT to splash oil on yourself or others,
especially if tossing pancakes.
- Never leave cooking unattended.
- Before starting cooking, know what to do to prevent fire and other risks.
- Before starting cooking, know what to do in the event of fire.
Here are the ingredients for pancakes:
- Eggs (2)
- Milk (1 pint - 550 millileters)
- Flour (9 ounces - 250 grams)
- Salt
- Sunflower or vegetable oil
- Serving suggestion: Sugar, Lemon, Jam or Fruit Preserves, Golden Syrup, or peach sauce
Here is how to prepare the pancakes:
- Sift the flour into a bowl.
- Add a pinch of salt, and the eggs
and beat well.
- Then add the milk slowly and gradually, continuing to mix until
you have a smooth batter.
- Pour a little oil in a frying pan (it is easiest to use a small
frying pan).
Heat the pan until it is hot, and the oil begins to smoke ever so
slightly.
- Use a spoon to put some of the batter mix in the pan. Put in just
enough batter to cover the bottom of the pan, tilting the pan to spread the
batter evenly.
- You will need to turn the pancake over during the cooking process.
You can do this either by tossing the pancakes (again this is easier if
using a small frying pan - note: take care NOT to splash oil),
or by using a large flat spoon or spatula to simply turn the pancake over.
- Continuing cooking the subsequent pancakes in this manner, until you
have used up all of the batter mixture. Don't forget to add more oil
as it gets used up.
- When cooked, the pancakes should be golden brown on both sides.
- You can serve the pancakes with whatever toppings you like, either sweet
or savory. They go particularly well with sugar, lemon juice, and jam
or fruit preserves, or you can make your own
peach sauce.
