Crab
Crabs are crustaceans, and many varieties of crabs are fished or farmed around the
world.
There are many different types of crabs, including:
- Blue crabs - These are very sweet crabs from North America. They most famously
come from Chesapeake Bay in
Maryland and
Virginia.
- Blue swimmer crabs (also known as "flower crabs") - These types of crabs
are found in the Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Eastern Mediterranean. They have
a sweet meat, and may be sold with hard shells, or as "soft shelled crabs"
(by allowing the crab to molt, and cooking before the shell hardens).
- Cromer crabs (also known as "Edible crabs") - This type of crab
is found in the North Sea, North Atlantic and Mediterranean. They have a distinctive thick
shell with an edge shaped like a pie-crust.
- Dungeness crabs - This type of crab is found on the West coast of North America from
Alaska to
Southern
California,
and are a popular delicacy.
- Horse crabs (also known as "Japanese blue crab") - Horse crabs are the most widely
fished species of crab around the world, most of them being caught off the coast of
China.
- King crab (also known as "Alaskan king crab" or "stone crabs")
- These crustaceans are are crab-like animals (they are not strictly speaking crabs)
fished in the waters off the coast of
Alaska.
Fishing for king crab is one of, perhaps the most, dangerous occupations in the
United States.
