How to Cook dishes from Latvia
Latvian cuisine makes use of barley, cabbage, eggs, grey peas,
onions, pork, potato, wheat, and seafood. Many recipes have been
influenced by
German cuisine,
Russian cuisine, or
Swedish cuisine.
It is probably fair to say that Latvian dishes can be quite
fatty, and generally do not make extensive use of spices. It is
also worth noting that there
is also a Latvian version of smorgasbord, which is known as
aukstais galds.
Here are some popular Latvian recipes and dishes:
- Borshch - Beet soup.
- Galerts - Jellied pork.
- Karbonāde - A breaded pork chop, deep-fried.
This dish is similar to
Austrian cuisine's
Wiener schnitzel.
- Pīrāgi - A bread roll containing bacon, ham and spices.
- Rasols - Potato salad.
- Sauerkraut
