How to Cook dishes from Serbia
Serbian cuisine includes a wide range of different dishes, and has
been influenced by
Austrian cuisine,
Hungarian cuisine,
Mediterranean cuisine, and
Turkish cuisine.
Some popular Serbian recipes and dishes include:
- Ajvar - A relish made from eggplant, red bell peppers
with garlic and chili.
- Cevapcici - Grilled ground beef or pork served with
lepinja (flatbread)
- Corba od luka - Onion soup.
- Ðuvec - Mixed stew vegetables, similar to ratatouille.
- Grasak - Pea stew, sometimes eaten with grilled meat.
- Gulas - The Serbian version of Hungarian cuisine's
goulash.
- Ljuta krompir corba - Spicy potato soup.
- Mućkalica - Meat (usually pork) cooked on a
barbecue
with tomato and pepper sauce.
- Paprikas - A peppery pork stew. Similar to
Hungarian cuisine's
pörkölt.
- Paradajz corba - Tomato soup.
- Pasulj - A traditional soup made from beans. It is
often eaten at Christmas
time.
- Pihtije - Jellied pork.
- Pljeskavica - A hamburger made from beef with lamb or pork,
grilled onions on flatbread.
- Podvarak - Pork with onions and chopped pickled cabbage.
The dish is preparing is prepared by baking, and then eaten with bacon
and vegetables.
- Riblja corba - Fish soup.
- Sarma - Cabbage leaf rolls containing ground meat, rice and onions.
They are often eaten on
Christmas Eve
and at Easter.
- Serbian salad - A salad made from diced cucumbers, onions and tomatoes.
It is seasoned with feferon, a Serbian hot pepper that is said to
taste somewhat similar to cayenne pepper.
- Tursija - Pickled vegetables.
- Urnebes - A salad made from cottage cheese and hot chile peppers. It is often eaten as
a side dish with barbecues.
